Dr. Hoopes was born and raised in the Boston area. He then moved to Philadelphia for his undergraduate education at the University of Pennsylvania where he earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering (a perfect background for engineering the perfect orthodontic appliance!) He also studied abroad at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology for a portion of his undergraduate training.
Dr. Hoopes continued his education at Columbia University where he received his Doctor of Dental Surgery while serving as class president. He also received the American College of Dentists Outstanding Student Leader Award. At Columbia, he was published for his research in evaluating the changes to patient approval for orthodontic treatment after a new New York state law.
Dr. Hoopes enthusiastically embraced the opportunity to leave the cold winters of the Northeast and moved to the Triangle to complete his specialty training in orthodontics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. While attending UNC, he completed his Master's thesis on bone remodeling that occurs when using mini-implants during orthodontic treatment.
Dr. Hoopes is married to Dr. Cher Hoopes, an endodontist in the Triangle area, whom he met in dental school. Outside of orthodontics, Dr. Hoopes loves exploring the immense amount of hiking available in North Carolina with his wife and their dog, Sawyer. He also enjoys cooking, watching Formula 1 racing, and rooting for his Boston sports teams.
